First Aid Courses

Basic First Aid

The Red Cross Basic First Aid Course provides students with a thorough grounding in the fundamental theories and practices of of First Aid. Topics covered include Accident Assessment, Resuscitation, Wound Care, Burns, Unconsciousness, Fractures and Sports Injuries. The course is typically run one night a week for ten weeks, at our modern training facility in Limerick City. Upon successful completion of the course participants receive the Irish Red Cross Certificate in Basic First Aid. The Certificate is valid for three years, and is also the minimum requirement for admission to further training within the organisation. Occupational First Aid

The Red Cross Occupational First Aid Course is designed for businesses and individuals who wish to satisfy the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) requirement for Occupational First-Aiders in the workplace. Our course fully encompasses the syllabus for Occupational First Aid training as defined by the HSA, and may also be extended to include other material as appropriate to the nature of the customer's business.
Core topics covered in the course include:

  • Accident Assessment
  • Asphyxia and Choking
  • Heart Attack and C.P.R.
  • Wounds and Bleeding
  • Unconsciousness and The Recovery Position
  • Head, Neck and Back Injuries
  • Fractures
  • Eye Injuries
  • Burns and Chemical Injuries, and
  • First Aid Kit Recommendations

This course is normally run over three consecutive or non-consecutive working days, between 9am and 5pm. Alternative arrangements may be made depending on staff availability, leave, shift obligations etc. Please note however, that the same amount of time will be required to conduct the course even if alternative arrangements are made. The course can be held in our training facility in Limerick City, or on the customer's premises if a suitable training venue exists.
Upon successful completion of the course students will receive the Irish Red Cross Certificate in Occupational First Aid, thereby satisfying the requirements as set out in S.I. 44 of 1994, and as outlined in the HSA's 'Guidelines on First Aid at Places of Work'
A minimum of 10 students are required in order to hold a course. However, each month we run Occupational First Aid courses which offer companies or individuals to book one or more places.

Occupational First Aid (Refresher)

This is a one day course which is specifically designed to update the knowledge and skills of current occupational first aiders.

Particular emphasis will be placed on:

  • Changes which have occurred in Occupational First Aid, skills and theory in the previous three years
  • Essential Life Saving techniques
  • C.P.R. & Choking
  • Common injuries and illnesses encountered in the work place

To qualify, participants must be holders of a valid Occupational First Aid Certificate and pre-course reading is highly recommended.

Certification is valid for a further three year period.

Public Access Defibrillation

The Red Cross also provides training in Public Access Defibrillation for Industry and the public. This course combines the use of an Automated External Defibrillator with Basic Life Support Skills. Applicants for this course must have previous B.L.S. training
